In the past Irish and I (okay, mostly Irish) have tossed around the idea of doing a strictly cash budget when it comes to groceries. Each time he brought up the subject I wasn't too excited, not because I didn't think we could do it, but I'm all about the points! With our MC we earn points, which in turn can give us free groceries. My only hang up was loosing out on those points.
It was about the middle of January when Irish finally 'put his foot down' and said that this is what we are going to do. I rolled my eyes, and almost felt like telling him to start doing the grocery shopping, BUT as a good & supportive wife (like I try to be) I said OK. We discussed what we thought would be a reasonable weekly amount for our family, and withdrew that amount.
So here I am, as I drop him off at work, with an envelope 'full' of cash. Off to the grocery store I went. I decided the best way to 'manage' the money would be to write each item I am putting in my cart down on a piece of paper, along with it's price, if it's a weigh-able item...then I would have to weigh it and figure out how much it cost. After all, how am I suppose to know what is in my cart and what my bill is going to be when I get up to the cashier. That was/is my biggest fear of paying with cash, not knowing my total...and then coming up short, then having to ask the cashier to remove items. I could have just kept a running total in my head, but with this prego brain I've got going on, and two little ones in the cart...it was best that I wrote it down!
Before we made the switch from plastic to paper (MC to cash) I would have never described us as people who just bought what ever, or purchased items that we didn't really need. Yes there were times that one of the kids would say "Oh Mom, look at this" or "Could we get _____ please". Every once in a while I would 'indulge', because everyone needs a treat now and then. Plus I didn't always want to be saying NO to my kids.
When you are buying with plastic, it's SO easy to over spend, because 'money isn't an issue'.
I can not tell you the freedom (...is that the right word?) I felt when buying with cash. I knew exactly what was in my cart, there was no surprise at the total when I got to the till & to be able to pay in full right then and there, knowing we didn't owe the MC company for the food we just bought, was AMAZING!
It almost feels like a game, I feel like such a winner when I purchase everything we need for the week (I like to plan my meals a week in advance, so that I know all the ingredients I will need, thus resulting in one weekly grocery trip) and come out UNDER budget! This has happened both times I've gone so far since starting our cash budget. The last time, which was our last shopping trip for the month, we had a nice little amount left over. So I 'treated' us by going to Costco and buying some items that we've been out of for a while, but use on an almost daily basis...plus we had company coming that weekend, so I wanted to be all stocked up! You know what?? I even have $7.50 left after shopping at Costco!! I was so pleased with my self!
In the end, I would recommend doing a cash budget if you are looking for some way to save some money. In the two trips I've taken, I've noticed that we are now spending on average $30 less a week in groceries. Now keep in mind that I haven't had to replace the Tide, or buy more chicken, which are big ticket items, but I'm still fairly confident in my self that I can remain on budget! (we also decided that diapers should not be included in our grocery budget, and have a different amount set aside for those)
Ooh and the bonus of it all, is that with the new program our store has come out with (we shop at Superstore, and they now have their PC Plus Points system), I can STILL earn points on the items I purchase (that have been selected for plus points) even when I pay with cash!! I don't get my points for bringing my own bags...but at least I'm getting points! Yay, happy day!!

I didn't vanish!
My oh my! I have not posted in a WHILE! Let's just say we've been a little busy! Saying that I feel as though appointments have taken over our lives would be an understatement!! We have chiropractor for myself (which for six weeks was THREE times a week, then down to twice a week for I can't even remember how long, and now I am finally able to go once a week. Currently trying to make it two weeks between visits) Chiropractor for the kids (Starting in January, they went once a week for 10 weeks), massage for me (whenever I can fit it in & find someone to watch my kids for an hour and a half), dentist for me...multiple visits (I was having some jaw/clenching issues since the accident, and as a result a tooth on the bottom started to shift/'pop' out of place. I now wear an 'adorable' little splint at night...it is very attractive!).
Then we were seeing a pediatrician for Benson as he has had a partial tongue tie since birth and I was worried that it was getting in the way of his intake of solid foods...back in December. After a feeding assessment done by a Speech Therapist, in March, it was decided that we did not need to take any action regarding his tongue tie as he was managing quite well for his age, with good movement of his tongue. They said that hopefully as he continues to use his tongue, the tie will stretch out even more. (Of course there was a space of 3 months from the time that I went to my family Dr with the initial concern of his tongue tie, to getting in with the Pediatrician, to be referred for the appointment with the Speech Therapist)
Oh, and let's not forget about Marshall's appointments with the Ears, Nose, Throat Surgeon...it has been decided that he needs to get his Adenoids removed! We are still in the waiting process for this one, but it should be a 'fun' two weeks after the surgery trying to get that boy to sit still and not be active!
Soooo, mix all of that in with the daily 'monotony' of house work, school runs, errands, and just trying to be a good mom and wife...I haven't felt like I've had that much time, or energy to keep up on the blog or be creative in any way.
I DID however, the other day, find some time to squeeze in a Digital Lay Out! OH, it felt so good to actually finish a page! I love it, let me share it with you!
The pages that I have finished this year have been for my Year in Review Pages. At the end of the year I try to have one page per month highlighting a little of what we did each month. While it is still satisfactory to have those pages done, it is even more so to do a random page about my kids!!
I love this girl and all of her goofy faces!!

Bed time snuggles
Tonight Marshall asked me if Benson could sleep with him all night...ALL night (this isn't the first time either!). He even emphasized the ALL part! I told him that tonight he couldn't, but when Benson was bigger, they definitely could have a sleepover. Marshall made sure to clarify that I meant Benson could sleep in HIS bed WITH him. Again I told him Yes, but not until Benson was older.
So, for tonight, he settled for bed time snuggles.
So, for tonight, he settled for bed time snuggles.
...Marshall was ecstatic!
and Paisley got some snuggles "all her self" too...

Yay for being organized :)
I've always been one for meal planning! Most of the time I just do a week at a time. I like to get all the groceries I need for the entire week in one shopping trip. It saves me time, money, and then I don't feel like I'm running around like a chicken with it's head cut off in the late afternoon trying to decide what we are going to have for dinner!!
During summer time things kind of become a little more slack. Bed time isn't always that consistent and dinner is not always planned.
In the past I've always just written out our meals for the week on paper. Over the weekend I bought a whiteboard calendar. Now I have five...yes that's right five weeks of meals planned.
Week 5
Sunday: Pancakes
Monday: Hamburger Stroganoff
Tuesday: 3 Bean & Lentil Soup
Wednesday: Chicken Parmesan Cutlets with Rice & Veggies
Thursday: Freezer Meal
Friday: Left Overs
Saturday: Cajun Chicken Pasta
I always write down where I'm getting the recipe from so I know where to look on the day that I'm making it! If it's from somewhere on the internet and we like it, I add it to my Binder!!
Feel free to use this as your new 5 week meal menu!! Enjoy :)

Auntie Becca saves the day!!
Since we've returned home (from being on bed rest in Calgary/High River) Monday has become our day to get groceries. It use to be Saturday's, but the stores were always crammed & it "ate up" our family time. So as any other Monday we got up, ate breakfast and got ready to go shopping.
Shopping with three kids isn't the easiest of tasks, especially when the older two don't want to sit in the cart. Most days I can convince Miss P to sit in the cart along with Benson's car seat...but then there is Big M who always seems to be topped to the brim with energy and today especially was no exception.
As with each shopping trip with kids the main goal is: Go in, Get the goods and Get out!
Today we finished up in the store, loaded up the van with the groceries and the kids. I go to start it up and drive home...and Gggg....Gggg.....Ggggg! The van won't start. Now this isn't the first time this has happened to us, in fact the exact same thing happened when we were all loaded up to "move" back to Lethbridge after Benson was born at the end of May. We tried boosting it then, but that didn't work. So we had a brand new battery put in it, I was a little choked when it wouldn't start!
Just to add to my luck, I had plugged my cell phone in earlier that morning to charge it up...and I forgot to bring it with me when I went out for groceries.
So I UNload the kids, walk back into Superstore, and call the husband!! It doesn't help that it's pretty close to lunch and Benson is going to want to eat real soon!
Luckily Irish was able to get a hold of Becca (My cousins lovely wife) and she came to rescue us!! When she arrived at Superstore the spot in front of our van was vacant!
After we hooked up the booster cables, I got in the front seat of our van, said a quick little prayer, turned the key and PRESTO it started right up!! YAY!
So Thank you Auntie Becca for coming and rescuing me and the hungry kids!!
As I read over this post, it doesn't really seem like a big deal...but at the time it sure felt like it. We only have one vehicle, so it's not like Irish could have come and rescued us. The kids were getting hungry, Benson was starting to fuss. All of my friends have kids...so there wasn't much chance that me, and my three kids, plus the groceries and car seats would have fit into one of their vehicles (that is even if I could have remembered any of their numbers...since I didn't have my cell with me).
As of this evening we now have an AMA membership!! That's right van, I dare you not to start again! Mwahahaha *evil laugh*

Longing
The dictionary states that the word Longing means - strong, persistent desire or craving, especially for something that is unattainable or distant.
My particular longing is for something that feels so very distant. I am longing to hold this sweet little baby of ours. To snuggle him, kiss him, smell him, watch his every movement and facial expression in complete awe.
This pregnancy has definitely felt like the longest pregnancy...ever. The first half of the pregnancy seemed to fly by. What with being a mom of two busy children, working part time, trying to keep house, and trying to 'maintain' my good wife status...why wouldn't it!? Then the second half of the pregnancy came about, and we took a little unexpected 'detour' if you will. Going from completely busy full days of being in full on Mom/Wife mode, to bed rest came as a bit of a shock to my system...it has definitely taken some getting use to! (and I can NOT wait to be able to go back to full on Mom/Wife mode!! "Resume" my life...cook meals for my family, clean my house, take my kids places...even if it's just for a walk to the park, see my friends, craft/sew/scrapbook...be a family under one roof for more than just the weekend!! etc...)
Time has most definitely seemed to pass by faster since I have been able to be in High River with my kids! At times I feel like we still have so long to go, while on the other hand we're down to the final count down (3 WEEKS!!)
I guess when you are told half way through your pregnancy that you are at risk of going into pre-term labor again, and there is a chance of loosing your baby (if we didn't pass the point of viability)...you wonder every day if this day will be the day that it happens, or if you will make it to the next....making every day feel like a week, and every week feel like a month!
I'm not sure who is getting to be more impatient, me or the kids. Marshall asks me almost every day if the baby is coming out of my tummy. In fact just last week Irish and I celebrated our 7th wedding anniversary. We went into Calgary for dinner, while my most amazing in-laws looked after the kids.
The following morning the kids come down into our room. Marshall comes to my side of the bed, walking very cautiously and asks "Mom, did the doctor take the baby out, or is it still in your tummy?" I told him that the baby was still in my tummy...to which I have never seen a more disappointed face. I reminded him that we had to have his birthday first, and then the baby will come. He then asks "Is my birthday tomorrow?!" I had a little chuckle as his birthday was still 9 days away.
He then climbs into bed with us...yes all 4 (I guess you could say 5...with the size of my belly) of us, 'cozied' up in a double bed, comfortable wouldn't you say!?
A couple minutes later he hops out of the bed and peeks over the side of the crib that is in the room (I had some clothes hanging over the side, thus preventing his ability to see through the side). I only assume he was checking to see if a baby was by chance laying in there, as once he discovered that there wasn't one, his shoulders and head dropped and he slowly crawled back into the bed pouting!
Every morning when I come upstairs and the kids see me Paisley's first reaction is "BABY!" as she runs to me with out stretched arms and gives my belly a soft hug and a kiss, and then says "Hi Mom" and returns to what she was doing prior!
Every time the kids leave the house, or go to bed they always have to say goodbye/night to baby! It's so cute, I LOVE IT! I can't wait to see them with their new little brother!
Needless to say, this baby is being very patiently (somewhat) awaited by very excited siblings who are just waiting to love on him! (and I might add Parents too!)

28 week update
I had my second appointment with my Obstetrician here in Calgary this past Tuesday (March 6th). My blood pressure was normal, babies heartbeat was good...but when the doctor measured my tummy, it was measuring small for how far along I am. She decided it would be best if I had an ultrasound just to check up on baby and make sure he was growing. She said she wanted me to have an ultrasound within the next two weeks and come back for another appointment with her in three weeks.
When the receptionist was calling to book my appointment for the Ultrasound the clinic had an opening that afternoon, so I took it.
The Ultrasound technician and the Doctor (who looks at the results afterwords right in the clinic) both said that he was right on target for where he should be at this stage. The Doctor even had a graph with my last ultrasound results and this ultrasounds results on it, showing the growth in babies head, stomach and thigh bones. Seeing this gave me some peace of mind.
For now my Obstetrician wants me to stay in Calgary until i'm 32 weeks (April 1st). She would rather be on the safe side incase something does happen, as stated before in previous posts the Foothills Hospital is better equipped to handle premature babies. I guess in the last week four of her patients had their babies before 32 weeks.
It's getting to the point where I can't sit upright longer than an hour or else I start to cramp up. If I walk for longer than 20ish minutes I start to cramp up, as well as I can feel the baby getting lower and there's some tightness and pressure. Once all this starts I go lay down for a while and the cramping start to go away.
The way I look at it is, No it's not fun being away from my kids and husband and only seeing them on the weekends. I can't wait for the day that we are able to be a family all under one roof again! But at the same time, I am willing to make this small sacrifice for (possibly) the next three months so that this baby has the best possible chance of "cooking" as long as possible and being as strong and healthy as can be. I want to do all I can to give him the best possible start in this life.
I know that everything happens for a reason, and there is a lesson to be learned. Right now I'm not sure what the reason for this all is, nor have I figured out the lesson. I DO however have faith in our Lord, knowing that he knows what is best for me and my family, and I am willing to accept whatever he puts in our path.

...and as I was a bridesmaid I didn't carry my camera with me...so I had to rely on others for these pictures...and for some reason I don't have any with Kristi and Curtis together!! Lol!
We took this opportunity of us all at the Temple and dressed up to snap some family pictures!
Having a little fun with Auntie Lacey on our way to High River after the wedding
On their way down to Kalispell, the newlywed couple stopped at our house for a quick visit!! The kids LOVED it!!
Marshall and Paisley have started to play hide-and-seek together...SOOOO CUTE....and their only hiding spot right now is under the table!!
We went to Curtis and Kristi's gift opening and Miss P was quite amused by this nerf gun!
Ohh la la, cupcake cookbook! Kristi will be baking up a storm!
Sharing some cake with Auntie Kristi
Later that same day was Grandma Koltuns 60th birthday, Marshall enjoyed playing Tile Rummy his own way!!
Auntie Kaly taking advantage of the situation! P is finally starting to not be such a "mommas/daddys girl"
My Mr taking a cat nap after church
M with a moustache like Grandpa :)
The brains behind the glasses!
M, giving the Glasses a try!!
So as you can see the last little while has been a little busy for us! Hope you enjoyed the little update!
I'll be back sooner that later :)

Couldn't ask for a better day!
Today was seriously such a good day!! I enjoyed every minute of it! Both Paisley and Marshall were SUPER good ALL day today! It was amazing! There was hardly any whining at all! Marshall was so happy about everything we did, and had such a great attitude!!
It possibly had something to do with the fact that we kept so busy...you know what they say about being idle! Here is what our day looked like:
-We got up and had some breakfast (Oatmeal, made by Dad - THANK YOU)
-Cleaned breakfast up, and got ready for the day
-Put Miss P down for a nap
-Had some quality time with Marshall (Worked on his ABC's, Colors, Shapes, and Opposites)
-Helped Marshall play some Fisher Price toddler games on the computer, while I did some paper work
-Ate lunch
-Went to Bootcamp (Had an AWESOME workout!!)
-Went to the bank
-Came home and had a snack
-Read some books with Marshall (while Miss P was down for yet another nap)
-Got supper going while playing basketball with Big M
-Picked Irish up from downtown, went and checked out some b-ball shoes for him
-Ate supper as a family (the best part of our day)
-Cleaned supper up while Irish gave M a bath and cut his finger and toe nails...and picked out his toe jam!! (It's so cute, but Marshall gets the biggest kick out of his Toe Jam!!)
- Read scriptures and said bed time prayers with Marshall and put him in bed
-The banana bread baking began
-Started to learn some Creole (SO EXCITING!) while I was being a "patient" for Irish (practicing taping ankles)
And to top off the day...I'm going to go to bed BEFORE midnight!! I hope for many more days like this one, it was spectacular!!
...Too bad I don't have a cute picture to go with it....

OH what a day...of First's
Yesterday was an eventful day for Marshall! He experienced a lot of first's!
-first real day of being potty trained
-first time falling off the potty (He did hit his head on the counter, but I think it scared him more than anything)
-first accident...not near the potty (After this he went a got a diaper and was 'begging' me to put it on him...)
-first time burning his hand on the stove top element (after I had said "don't touch, it is hot")

...Like I said, it was an eventful day...
This morning we continued with the potty training process. Marshall was pretty excited that he got to wear Lightning McQueen and Mater underwear!! Today he experienced his first time peeing on the potty! He was pretty happy about it and as a result of this he got to put a sticker on his chart, and get a brand new Hot Wheels car....
After breakfast he went back on the potty in hopes that he would do a #2, after being on the potty for at least 25 min we figured he didn't have to go, he said he didn't have to go....only to go and sit up at the table two seconds later and pee all over the chair!
...We aren't quite sure if he is ready for this whole big thing quite yet! We're not stopping all together...just maybe not wearing 'big boy' underwear all day! We will see how it goes!!

School, bahball, and no sickness!!
It’s been a while, but I thought right now is better than never.
School is back in session and that means back to studying and having a “part time” relationship with my family. That’s one of the crappiest parts of school. I like spending lots of time with my family, and if I’m at school in classes/labs/studying, there is less family time. So, that’s why I say “part time”.
This year I am taking; Biology 1010, Kinesiology 2200 (Research Methodologies in Physical Activity Involvement), Knes 2000 (Foundations of Motor Skill Acquisition), Knes 2130 (Humanities Dimensions of Physical Activity Involvement), and Computer Science 1000. CS 1000 is my GPA booster this semester. I didn’t know that some University students didn’t know how to “double click”, or what the power button looks like. Do you know what hardware is?! Ya, this has been the lectures so far. Pretty boring. The first class I looked up Physical Therapy schools in the states and played mini golf on addicting games. The last class that I had, my friend and I just chatted the whole time (the funny thing is that we sit by each other). The other classes I have are good. I’ve always had a little battle with Bio, but I think this year will be different.
I’ve been playing basketball the last few weeks and I feel great. There is a church (stake) league going on, and so far we are 3-0. The first 2 games we played we won by over 30 points. Last night’s game was a little different. We won by 10, but we played at the 10th Ave chapel. Their gym is about 50 feet long and 30 feet wide. It was way different than playing in our larger gym. I did get a few injuries. I got a head to my cheek bone, an elbow to my jaw, and got the wind knocked out of me so bad I thought I was going to pass out. The guy that I ran into was about a foot taller than me and about 200 pounds larger than me. Remember watching Steve Nash get creamed by Robert Horry? Thats kinda what I felt like(but I didn’t lose a tooth).
Marshall is doing some really funny things lately. Just a few nights ago I went up to check on him and he was on his back with the covers halfway covering him. I go to move him back onto his tummy, and he starts crying. I tell him “it’s ok, you just need to go to sleep”. He keeps on crying, but I notice that his eyes aren’t open. He gets up on his knees and points to his bed, taps it a few times and then finally stops crying. His eyes are still shut, and he starts nodding off. I had to try my hardest not to laugh!! I think he was acting out his dream. We watch basketball highlights every morning on the lap-top and now, when he gets up I ask him what he wants. I assume he will say “nana” (for banana), or point to his sippy cup. NO WAY- he says “ i wan bahball... pees” (please). What a cutie!
Karley is doing great! We were just talking last night and she hasn’t been nauseous in a while, and we are almost over 3 months, so we think she is done being sick. She wasn’t near as sick as she was being pregnant with Marshall.
Have a great one- You know what my motto is “hey- I got some time to kill .........” (only a few people will get this one)
